“It can be so hard but you gotta live right now,” Logic
I want to highlight a new study in the British Medicine Journal that examined the correlation between phone calls to the US National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, suicide data, and exposure to Logic’s song 1-800-273-8255. The study identified a 6.9% increase in phone calls to Lifeline in 2017 and 2018. These changes correlated directly with the release of Logic’s song 1-800-273-8255 in April 2017 and his subsequent performances at the MTV Music Awards 2017 and the Grammy Awards 2018. The researchers estimated that the song potentially prevented 245 suicides.
In the song, Logic tells the story of a caller reaching out to Lifeline and the feedback and hope given in return. The music video adds a different twist, pairing the lyrics with a story of a youth discovering their sexuality and coping with bullying. In both the song and the music video, Logic empathizes with the experience of suicidal thoughts and feelings, gives words of encouragement, and offers hope. Using Lifeline’s phone number in the title provides a resource to a listener in need of support.
