Introducing Kevin Boyd, Founder of Future Full of Hope
“Allow me to reintroduce myself, my name is Hov!” Jay Z, Public Service Announcement
A typical flow of conversation is turn based - you share a little bit about yourself, they share some, then you share, then they share, etc. This back and forth exchange of personal information is expected in most interactions, but not in the therapeutic relationship.
You likely don’t know much about your therapist nor would you expect to. Afterall, the goal of the relationship is to focus on your goals and needs and one of your therapist’s ethical responsibilities is to maintain professional boundaries support that dynamic. However, it’s also sometimes nice to have a bit of a background on your therapist before deciding to begin work with that person The human connection between therapist and client is integral to the change process of therapy which is why I’m sharing some of my interests here. So allow me to introduce myself.
“Now here’s a funky introduction of how nice I am…” Phife Dawg, Check the Rhime by A Tribe Called Quest
I’m a therapist (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) with 12+ years experience and who is also a massive hip hop head. My love for hip hop often collides with my love for working with people, hence the lyrics integrated throughout my site. I learned the value of connecting with clients via this common interest as I served youth and families for 9 years within the Los Angeles juvenile justice system (first as direct service provider and later a clinical supervisor). My team and I rolled out a therapeutic music program which taught youth to write, record, and perform rap music in the greater context of hip hop culture. We used creative expression as a catalyst for clients processing mental health issues (such as trauma and loss, anxiety, depression, anger management, family and peer conflict) and substance abuse recovery. These clients persevered despite community and police violence, economic inequality, structural racism. and other challenges – a living testament to the strength of human resilience.
The idea that the future is full of hope is at the core of my work. In 2018, I saw a billboard posted at Mosaic Los Angeles at the corner of Hollywood and LaBrea which read, “The future is full of hope.” That message resonated with my core values and became a personal mantra; I believe that my work empowers clients to create a future full of hope.
“It’s the North Cack baby I’m the boss…” G Yamazawa, North Cack
Today Future Full of Hope, PLLC is based in Durham, North Carolina and provides teletherapy across 6 states. I believe that each individual has the internal resources to overcome life’s challenges and that therapy can be a means to activating those natural strengths. My mission is to provide person-centered, strength-based, and solution-focused care as you process your past, embrace your present, and step into what’s next for your life.
I love working as a therapist because I get to join others in discovering hope and in their futures, homes, families, communities, and the world. I specialize in solution-focused and trauma-informed care, often using cognitive-behavioral strategies during therapy. I get joy in collaborating with clients as they process the past, embrace the present, and create their futures. I cheer for University of Illinois athletics and Duke basketball and I self-care by running, lifting weights and playing basketball. I also love Stephen King (and reading in general), TV, movies, and console gaming.
